Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about preparing for your appointment, safety standards, treatment techniques, coverage options, and our mobile nursing service across Kamloops.

Is in-home earwax removal safe?

Yes. As a Registered Nurse, I have performed earwax removal in both clinical settings and private residences. Safety and hygiene are top priorities: all equipment used in your home is either fully disposable or meticulously cleansed to clinical nursing standards to ensure complete peace of mind.

What methods do you use during a visit, and does it hurt?

Treatment involves gentle water irrigation or manual extraction using a specialized curette tool, chosen based on what is safest and most effective for your ear. If the eardrum is blocked by excessive wax, gentle irrigation with a low-pressure device and an adapted safety tip is used to protect the eardrum. If wax is near the opening and the eardrum is clearly visible, manual removal with a curette is performed gently and comfortably.

What should I do to prepare before my appointment?

Clients are advised to instill a few drops of mineral oil or olive oil into the ear canal for a couple of days, prior to the visit. This softens the cerumen for a smoother, gentler removal. Please note that as the wax softens, feelings of fullness or reduced hearing may temporarily increase until the appointment.

How do I know if it is earwax or an ear infection?

The only definitive way to confirm wax buildup is through an otoscopic examination of the ear canal. If pain accompanies the buildup, an underlying infection may be present, and you will be advised to consult your family physician. Likewise, if the otoscope shows a completely clear ear canal despite your symptoms, you will be directed to your physician for appropriate follow-up care.

Which service areas do you travel to in and around Kamloops?

We provide mobile nursing visits across all of Kamloops, British Columbia, as well as surrounding communities situated within a 30-minute travel radius of the city.

Are mobile nursing services covered by private insurance or extended health benefits?

Many private extended health insurance plans cover all or part of registered nursing fees. Please note that direct billing is not available; you will be provided with an official receipt to submit directly to your extended health provider for reimbursement.

Can I claim this service on my Canadian income taxes?

Yes. If you do not have extended medical health coverage, you can retain your nursing receipts to claim as eligible medical expenses for non-refundable tax credits on your annual tax return.

How do I book an in-home appointment?

Booking is straightforward. You can easily reach out through our website or contact us directly to arrange a mobile consultation at a date and time that suits your schedule.

When should I avoid using ear drops or having ear wax removed at home?

Ear drops and ear wax removal procedures are not appropriate for everyone.

If you have a known or suspected perforated eardrum, ear tubes, previous surgery, active ear drainage, significant ear pain, or signs of infection, please consult your physician or nurse practictioner before using ear drops or proceeding with ear wax removal.

If you are unsure whether ear drops are safe for you, please contact Gentle Ear Care before beginning any ear wax softening treatment.

Your safety comes first.

Every appointment includes a nursing assessment to determine whether ear wax removal is appropriate. If concerns are identified, treatment may be deferred and further medical assessment recommended.
